Preface
Hi,
Very recently I moved into a residential area at Thane, which is an extended suburb of Mumbai in India. To my utter chagrin I found a seemingly insurmountable problem..... that of incessant traffic noise.
This noise is generated by the high volume road traffic of an 8 lane highway running about 40 ft away from my house. The traffic is 24 hours a day , 7 days a week and 365 days a year! Most of the noise is from container traffic and other cargo carriers.
When I bought the house about 10 years back, this highway was just a 2 lane road with moderate traffic. This road had been turned into the present 8 lane one as late as the last 5 years. I had moved into the present location just about a year back
The noise is so heavy that despite my keeping the windows closed, I get to sleep only by stuffing my ears with ear plugs. Even after this, sleep is not paceful since the vibrations keep me disturbed.
I wrote to various local auhorities like the Traffic Police, Municipal Commissioner, the local politicians, the state and cental ministries. I suggested that they in the very least take such steps as ban use of power horns, eliminate road bumps. Later on they can take such other steps like plant trees, buils sound barriers etc.
Many of the above persons acknowledged my letter, but have not taken any steps for resolving this.
I need to hear from any of you if you face similar problems and how you have tackled them.
I would like to take recourse to legal remedies as a last step.
